Peppermint Magazine's Milton Pinafore

Another cult favourite, as soon as this released I knew I had to try it for myself.

Pinafores are having a bit of a moment right now, and honestly I'm loving it. I love the not-skirt-not-dress-layerable-swooshy thing they have going on. I've mentioned this before, but living in a changeable-weather city I also love anything that has layering potential.

I've made a couple of pinafores already: the Mood Gambit Pinafore (my version here), and a hacked wrap dress version of the Papercut Patterns Sierra Jumpsuit which I honestly love wearing like a pinafore, with thick tights and a turtleneck. I'm keen to add more to my arsenal and the Peppermint Milton Pinafore was an instant hit so I had no choice but to try it out.

Peppermint Magazine collaborates with independent pattern designers and for the Milton Pinafore they worked with Just Patterns. Peppermint Mag gives the patterns away for free, with an optional donation. They're Brisbane-based and their office was completely inundated with the recent flooding so since I loved this pattern so much I gave back to thank and help them - and if you enjoy their patterns I encourage you to do so as well.

The fabric I used for this was a bargain bin polyester crepe I snagged for $5 a meter at Spotlight. I'd seen this particular fabric design before and coveted it, but I have a preference to use natural and if possible environmentally-friendly fibres, but crepe has it's place and I know I'll love to wear this design, so as it was such a steal I ended up with the rest of the bolt.

Sewing with polyester is Not Fun (pin the absolute shit out of everything, and you'd better finish the seams before the whole thing unravels!), but the outcome is that it has a lovely weight and drape, so I have no regrets choosing this fabric.

I found these cute as heck buttons at Darn Cheap Fabrics when looking for something to match this pattern. I'm a cheapskate, let's face it, so I didn't want to fork out for them. After extensive searching I still didn't find anything better, then two weeks later I had an actual DREAM about buying these buttons so I made the journey back to the store to get some.

The pattern instructions say to put the two buttons for each of the straps on the inside of the waistband, but these are too pretty to hide! So here they are on the outside in all their adorable green glory.

And there's yet another of my #makenine2022 done! I'm going to be all about layers when it finally starts to get cold here so I might find myself making another pinafore soon enough...
